Company Profile
PANNAR is a company with its origins deeply rooted in agriculture. It was founded in 1958 in Greytown, a thriving agricultural community situated in the heart of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, on the Eastern Seaboard of South Africa.
In 1960, PANNAR initiated its hybrid maize breeding programme and began developing its own improved cultivars, specifically adapted to meet the needs of farmers in South Africa. A few years later, it became the first private seed company in South Africa to register a maize hybrid for the local market. Over the years many more PAN hybrids followed with demand exceeding all expectations and PANNAR grew rapidly to its current position as a regional market leader and global player.
Markets
Since PANNAR's early days when it only marketed maize seed, the company has come a long way. Today, in addition to its maize hybrids, PANNAR markets a range of seeds including sunflower, soybeans, grain sorghum, forage sorghum, dry beans, wheat and a comprehensive range of pasture seeds. Vegetable and flower seeds are the speciality of PANNAR’s sister company Starke Ayres (www.starkeayres.co.za). It is our objective to offer our customers a complete range of products to meet all their requirements. PANNAR’s customer base has also grown dramatically with the company now marketing seed worldwide.

Research
Genetic research is the fundamental requirement of any plant improvement programme. PANNAR boasts a team of highly qualified plant breeders and agricultural scientists, who work in modern, fully equipped research stations with sophisticated laboratory and testing facilities. PANNAR’s international research programme includes facilities in southern Africa, the US and Argentina, each geared towards developing cultivars suited to specific world markets.
Quality
Quality seed production is one of the keys to PANNAR’s success and all measures are taken to ensure that seed of superior physical and genetic quality is produced. Seed is produced by selected growers and all production activities are closely supervised by PANNAR’s production team to ensure that our stringent genetic requirements are met. Quality is assessed both before and after processing and packing at PANNAR’s quality control laboratories. Quality control and laboratory tests are in accordance with ISTA regulations.
